Dieter Pohlers
Dieter Pohlers died in Berlin in 1984, not yet fifty years old. In 1987, a first retrospective of his unknown works was held in Solothurn. It showed an oeuvre that is yet to be discovered. Dieter Pohlers’ cultural home was Dresden, where he also studied at the Hochschule der Künste. He lived as a freelance artist, traveling extensively in the USA, Europe and his adopted home of Berlin. “My work consists of fields of tension,” said Dieter Pohlers. “If art wants to remain alive, it must not copy the living, but must appear to be distant from life without becoming mask-like.” In his artistic work, chaos and order were not static opposites. Consistent ordering always revealed anew “the archaic elemental force of becoming”, the “creativity of art into something truly alive”.
